PATTAYA, THAILAND — Police officers arrested a foreign man at Pattaya Beach on 18 March 2024 after alarmed tourists reported him for aggressive behaviour and possession of weapons.
Rapid Police Action Restores Calm
According to Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Rattanapan, spokesman of the Pattaya City Police Station, at 17:45 local time several tourists called the Pattaya City Hotline 1337 to report a man acting violently near the sunbed area close to Beach Road. Within five minutes, a patrol team arrived on the scene and detained the suspect.
“THE TEAM INTERVENED IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT INJURIES AND SECURE THE AREA,” said Lt. Col. Rattanapan in a statement recorded at the station on Tuesday. Officers later confirmed that a 15‑centimetre knife and a metal scissors were found in the man’s bag.
Eyewitnesses Describe Panic at the Shore
Witness Maria Jensen, a Danish visitor staying at a hotel on Soi 10, told police that around 50 beachgoers near her section of umbrellas rushed away when the man began shouting and pacing. “HE MOVED TOWARD PEOPLE HOLDING SOMETHING SHINY — EVERYONE RAN,” she said in her formal police testimony.
Officers from the Tourist Police Division Region 2, led by Captain Nattaporn Siriwat, restrained the suspect within three minutes of contact and transported him in a pickup truck to the Pattaya Police Station on Pattaya Second Road.
Legal Steps Under Thai Law
Police Superintendent Colonel Kritsada Manopchai confirmed at 19:00 that the man remained in custody pending identification and background verification. “HE WILL BE CHARGED UNDER SECTION 371 OF THE THAI CRIMINAL CODE FOR CARRYING AN OFFENSIVE WEAPON IN PUBLIC,” the superintendent stated. Officials said the detainee’s nationality and mental state were still under evaluation.
Authorities Urge Public to Report Threats
Following the arrest, Pattaya City Hall released a message reminding residents and visitors to use Hotline 1337, available 24 hours daily in English, Thai, and Russian, to report aggressive or suspicious acts in tourist zones. The announcement added that more than 120 patrol officers currently monitor the beach stretch between North Pattaya Pier and Walking Street.
“WE WILL NOT TOLERATE BEHAVIOUR THAT ENDANGERS VISITORS OR DISTURBS PUBLIC ORDER,” said Deputy Mayor Bancha Thepchai during a press briefing on 19 March. He confirmed additional weekend patrols for the March–April peak season, when over 10,000 visitors per day occupy the beachfront.
Security Measures Intensified Ahead of Peak Season
The Chonburi Provincial Police reported that since 1 March, officers have tightened security by expanding mobile patrol hours from 10 to 14 per day and positioning CCTV units every 200 metres along the coast. According to Regional Commander Major General Prasert Wongpittak, these steps aim to cut response times below five minutes per emergency during the approaching Songkran holiday period.
As of Wednesday morning, the unidentified man remains in a holding cell pending psychological assessment and drug screening. Results are expected by 22 March, after which the public prosecutor’s office will decide on further charges.
