CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – A Spanish tourist couple and the operator of a small self-service laundromat in Chiang Mai were embroiled in a public dispute over an alleged physical assault and a video suspected of being edited with artificial intelligence.
Dispute over washing machine problem
According to the shop owner, the conflict began when the Spanish couple complained about problems with a washing machine and accused him of operating a faulty machine. He later stated that the pair had inserted too little money and pressed buttons at random, contrary to clearly visible operating instructions, which in his view caused the malfunction.
House rules and 2,000-baht fine for shoes
The owner emphasized that easily readable signs on the wall of his business explained that the machines started automatically once a sufficient amount of money had been inserted. The situation escalated further when the tourists allegedly put shoes in the machine, even though this was prohibited under the house rules and carried a 2,000-baht penalty for washing footwear.
Phone video and police involvement
The Spanish holidaymakers said they had overlooked the warning notices and refused to pay the fine, then accused the operator of shouting at them and began filming his face with a mobile phone. The shop owner said he did not attack the couple, but only tried to explain the situation and delete the video from the woman’s phone because, according to his account, he had not agreed to being recorded.
Allegation of AI-assisted video manipulation
Later, the police were called, and according to the owner they instructed the couple to delete the footage, which the Spaniards did before leaving the premises. The operator claimed, however, that the tourists subsequently restored the video from the phone’s trash folder, edited it using AI technology and published it together with a negative Google review in order to allege that he had physically attacked them.
Facebook statement and online reactions
He then decided to present his side of the story on 9 February on the laundromat’s official Facebook page and asked internet users to report what he saw as a false review as misleading. The owner said similar problems with foreign tourists had occurred several times in the past and were causing him noticeable psychological stress, while many Thai users online expressed support and called for resolving the conflict through legal channels if necessary.
Broader concerns over digital evidence
The case highlighted concerns about how quickly disputes that began in small local businesses could spill over onto the internet. It also raised questions among commentators about the potential impact of allegedly manipulated videos and negative online reviews on the livelihoods of small operators.
