Afternoon Alcohol Sales in Thai Restaurants Still Banned

Afternoon Alcohol Sales in Restaurants Remain Prohibited

Bangkok – On September 11, 2025, reports circulated that restaurants in Thailand would now be allowed to serve alcoholic beverages between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The amendment to the Alcohol Control Act (No. 2, B.E. 2568) was intended to regulate sales more efficiently and adapt to the current situation. Authorities thanked both the previous government and the opposition for listening to the concerns of restaurateurs.

Clarification from Authorities

However, Taopiphop Limjittrakorn clarified on his Facebook page: “The afternoon alcohol ban still applies!” Many had asked whether restaurants may now legally serve alcohol between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The answer is: No, it remains illegal.

Historical Context

Although the new law repealed the original military decree of 1972, which prohibited sales between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., successive governments since 2008 have used Section 28 to reinstate the ban.

Current Government Decision

The most recent government decision, signed on June 23, 2025, contains no exceptions for restaurants.

Legal Exceptions

Currently, only the following establishments may serve alcohol between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.:
• International airports
• Legally licensed businesses
• Hotels with a valid hotel license

Compliance and Enforcement

Restaurants serving alcohol during this period violate the law and risk sanctions. The clarification aims to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that alcohol sales regulations in Thailand are correctly observed.
