Two dead in Kanchanaburi smelter explosion

Blast kills Myanmar worker and another, five injured in antimony furnace heat buildup

HUAI KRACHAO, KANCHANABURI – A furnace explosion at an antimony smelter has killed two workers and left five others injured. The blast struck just before 2am on August 4.

The heat buildup in a smelting furnace triggered the explosion around 1.50am. Seven workers were initially reported hurt, but two later died – one a Myanmar national, the other a local.

Two workers die after blast

Initially seven injured workers were reported. Later, one worker from Myanmar died, followed by a second victim succumbing to his injuries. That brings the death toll to two. Five workers remain under medical care.

Survivors suffer severe injuries

Several workers suffered serious burns and wounds from the explosion. They received emergency medical treatment and were rushed to hospital. One survivor was in critical condition in the intensive care unit. The five surviving patients are under close medical supervision.

Victims moved to two hospitals

The injured were first taken to Huai Krachao Chaloem Phra Kiat 80 Phansa Hospital. They were later transferred to Phahonphonphayuhasena Hospital for further treatment.

Police wait to question workers

Officers from Huai Krachao Police Station wanted to interview the injured on August 5. But medical staff refused, saying the patients were in critical condition and not able to give statements. Police are now waiting until the workers’ health improves.

Investigation into furnace explosion continues

The exact cause of the blast remains unclear. Early indications suggest a massive heat buildup inside the smelting furnace. Authorities plan to inspect the factory’s technical equipment and safety measures. Police also want to question the workers about the sequence of events and whether there were any warnings of technical problems before the explosion.
