PATTAYA, Thailand — A blaze ripped through a South Pattaya condo complex in the early hours of August 4, 2026, sending residents fleeing into the street. The room’s owner has an unusual theory: her cat may have switched on the stove.
The 35-year-old woman, Khun May, woke up around 2:30 am to the smell of smoke. Flames were already leaping from the electric stove in her kitchen on the sixth floor of the Arcadia Beach Continental Condominium on Soi Thappraya 7.
She believes her cat stepped on the on-off switch — and claims a similar incident happened once before.
Chaotic evacuation at dawn
Khun May grabbed only her phone and ran. She alerted neighbours and building staff, but the fire spread through her room at terrifying speed.
Police and disaster response teams arrived at 2:36 am and evacuated the entire D building. Thai and foreign residents had to flee through thick smoke into the open air.
Two-hour battle against the flames
Three fire trucks from the Pattaya Fire Department and rescuers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene. They used water to contain the blaze in room 610 and stopped it from spreading to neighbouring units.
After roughly two hours, firefighters put out the fire. The damage inside is immense: all belongings in the affected unit were destroyed.
Lucky break: no injuries
Despite the intense flames and panicked evacuation, no one was hurt. The property damage is limited to the gutted sixth-floor room.
For the victims, the night ended with a shock — but physically unharmed.

Forensics to determine real cause
As quirky as the cat theory sounds, officers are not relying solely on the owner’s account. Experts from the Regional Forensic Division 2 in Chonburi will examine the scene and reconstruct the actual cause of the fire.
Only after that investigation will it be clear whether the pet really triggered the emergency.
