MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – A 26-year-old flight attendant is in custody in Australia after allegedly attempting to smuggle over a kilogram of heroin into the country hidden in her crew luggage.
An incident unfolded when officers from the Australian Border Force (ABF) X-rayed twelve bags belonging to the flight attendant on flight TG465 at Melbourne Airport. Anomalies were detected, and a preliminary test on the white powder immediately indicated the presence of heroin, with an estimated street value of approximately half a million Australian dollars.

Flight TG465 had departed from Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 24 and arrived as scheduled in Melbourne on June 25. Upon arrival, ABF officers inspected the flight attendant’s luggage. Twelve travel bags were subjected to X-ray screening, revealing suspicious shadows.
Upon closer examination, officers discovered a white powder within the bags. A rapid field test confirmed the suspicions of the investigators: heroin. Subsequent analysis determined that over one kilogram of the drug was distributed across multiple bags.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Director Kittipong Kittikachorn made it clear that while the screening equipment meets international ICAO standards, its primary function is to detect explosives and security threats, not narcotics.
“Drug checks are typically part of arrival procedures, supplemented by sniffer dogs or other methods,” Kittipong explained. He added that a crew bag passing through without detection at departure was not a systemic failure but attributable to the specific purpose of departure control.

ABF Commander Clint Sims stated, “Organized crime groups continue to deliberately target ‘trusted insiders,’ including flight personnel, to smuggle illicit substances into Australia.”
