BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s aviation authority has significantly relaxed strict drone restrictions along the Cambodian border, though flight ban zones will persist in seven provinces.
CAAT opens airspace for drones
The thailändische Zivilluftfahrtbehörde (CAAT) announced the easing of stringent controls for unmanned aerial vehicles with Notice No. 16 for the year 2026. This move allows businesses and private individuals to resume drone operations across most of the country.
This decision follows a joint assessment with national security agencies. The CAAT stated that the situation in the border region has improved and emphasized that it will continue to monitor developments closely.
Seven provinces remain restricted areas
Strict flight bans will remain in effect in high-risk areas near the Cambodian border. These include specific districts in Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
In Ubon Ratchathani, the restricted zone covers nine districts, such as Khong Chiam, Sirindhorn, and Khemmarat. For Trat, the affected districts are Mueang Trat, Khlong Yai, and Bo Rai. A complete list of these districts has been published by the aviation authority.
Exceptions for agriculture and rescue missions
Drone flights are not entirely impossible within the controlled zones. The CAAT will issue case-by-case permits for agricultural purposes, disaster relief, or urgent life-saving missions.
State law enforcement operations are also exempt from these restrictions. Anyone requiring a permit must submit their application promptly through the authority’s official UAS portal.
Registration and insurance are mandatory
All drone operators in Thailand are required to register with the relevant authorities and declare their aircraft. Additionally, aviation regulations mandate compulsory drone insurance. No drone may take off without prior flight authorization via the CAAT portal.
