BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s government is advancing plans for a luxury train service that would traverse the country, aiming to attract affluent tourists and boost the state railway’s revenue.
Minister Meets Hotel Mogul
High-ranking officials from politics and the tourism industry convened in Bangkok. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn was joined by Deputy Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat, SRT Governor Anan Phonimdaeng, Athiphu Chit-anukroh from the Office of Rail Transport, and railway research head Piang-or Laohavilai. They met with William Heinecke, Chairman of Minor International, a company operating numerous luxury hotels and resorts. Together, they explored the concrete vision for a premium train service in Thailand.
Exclusive Ride Through Thailand
The core idea is a first-class tourist train offering more than just transportation. It is intended to attract international travelers with significant purchasing power, who are willing to pay for a unique experience. The ministry also aims to generate sustainable revenue for the chronically deficit-ridden State Railway of Thailand (SRT). Local communities along the routes are expected to benefit from this economic uplift.
New Law Makes It Possible
This initiative is supported by the recently enacted Rail Transport Act. This law comprehensively opens up rail transport to private investment and operation by private companies for the first time. Minister Phiphat views this as crucial for better utilization of the existing infrastructure, enabling quicker onboarding of investors without the state bearing the sole risk.
Routes with Local Soul
The Ministry of Transport plans close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for route planning. The envisioned connections will link both well-known main destinations and less-visited secondary locations. Along the tracks, travelers are to experience local legends and cultural performances, turning each journey into a ‘rolling Thailand museum’ – a trip through history and tradition.
When Will the First Luxury Train Run?
The ministry did not provide a specific timeline for operations. No details were given regarding costs, ticket prices, or a potential launch date. The government hopes to rapidly develop a prototype with private partners. However, the first journey is expected to be some time away.
