PHUKET, Thailand – A sleeping woman was bitten by a cobra in her own bed, marking the second snake-related incident on the island in a matter of days.
Screams Awaken Son
The terrifying event unfolded on the evening of June 17 in a home in the Mai Khao district. Around 9:30 PM, a cobra stealthily entered the house in the Baan Mak Prok settlement and made its way to the sleeping resident’s bed.
The woman screamed when the snake bit her. Fortunately, her son returned home earlier than usual, heard the screams, and rushed into the bedroom. He pinned the cobra with a metal rod and killed it with a broomstick.
Cobra Crawled to the Bed
The son later recounted the incident on Facebook under the name “Hod Pornthep Tupuan.” He also posted surveillance camera footage and expressed his disbelief: “How did it get in there? It even got to the bed!”
He immediately took his mother to Thalang Hospital. His posts generated a wave of sympathy online, with many users wishing the woman a speedy recovery and praising the son’s quick actions.
Tissue Damage from Bite
Doctors are continuing intensive treatment for the bite wound. The bite caused tissue damage and partial necrosis, meaning the affected tissue died.
According to reports, the woman is now in a stable condition and no longer in mortal danger. The family remains in shock after the incident and is warning other residents about the danger.
King Cobra in the Living Room
Just a short while later, a second snake appeared in a home in Rawai. The owner, Sukchai Yasawasuvisut, heard his dogs barking unusually loudly during the night and discovered a large king cobra during his search.
Disaster prevention officials from the Rawai municipality arrived to capture the reptile. The rescue of the approximately two to two-and-a-half-meter-long cobra took almost an hour.
Second Visit in Four Months
Special forces later relocated the snake to a remote natural area, releasing it far from residential neighborhoods. A video of the operation, shared on the Facebook page “Rak Rawai,” went viral immediately.
Homeowner Sukchai commented on the scene with dry humor: “Boiled or fried? Encountering something like this… or is it better to run?” It was the second king cobra on his property within four months.
Rainy Season Drives Snakes Into Homes
The two incidents are not isolated. During the rainy season, snakes and other venomous animals increasingly seek shelter in buildings. Heavy rainfall drives them from their natural habitats, forcing them into dry hiding places.
Residents are urgently advised to regularly check bedrooms and storage areas. Vigilance is especially needed in the evenings and at night, as the dramatic cases from Mai Khao and Rawai demonstrate.
