Police assign partial blame to the victim, who was driving in his own lane. The injured victim’s family speaks of an unbelievable injustice and is now involving a well-known aid organization.
Frontal crash with 290 milligrams percent
On February 18th, around 1 PM, the father of N.S. Sasithorn was traveling on the Tha Tako-Nakhon Sawan road with his girlfriend. Without warning, an oncoming car breached the central barrier and collided head-on with their vehicle. The force of the impact was so immense that the father’s girlfriend died at the scene. The driver responsible for the crash also lost his life. The father survived with severe injuries, including a complex leg fracture.
Months of pain and no justice
While the father endures months of painful rehabilitation and physiotherapy, his family awaits answers. The blood sample of the driver who caused the crash revealed a staggering alcohol level of 290 milligrams-percent, indicating a severe case of drunk driving. However, after more than four months, the family received a shock in June: The Tha Tako police concluded their investigation. The outcome was not negligent homicide by the drunk driver, but rather “mutual negligence.”
Police: Father was “not careful”
Officers justified their decision by stating the father was driving in the right lane. Furthermore, they claimed he neither braked nor attempted to swerve in the three seconds before impact, which is now being construed as negligent driving on his part. For the relatives, this is an obscene distortion of facts. Video footage from the accident site shows the drunk driver’s car losing control and veering far into the oncoming lane, while the father was simply driving straight ahead.
“High-ranking official” allegedly pulling strings
The family is convinced that favoritism played a role in the questionable classification. Investigations by the daughter revealed that a relative of the perpetrator is an influential official in the Tha Tako district. Since the accident, an icy silence has prevailed. The opposing party visited the injured man only once. During settlement negotiations, there was a complete lack of communication, and the father’s family has not received a single Baht in compensation to date.
Prominent helpers involved
On June 21st, the desperate family finally contacted the Facebook aid portal “Saimai Tong Rod.” The organization is known for fiercely advocating for citizens in cases of questionable police decisions. For the helpers, the case is clear: an innocent driver, who was in his own lane, is being made a scapegoat. The organization has now announced it will accompany the affected parties to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the Protection of Rights.
Prosecutor’s office to scrutinize proceedings
Traffic law will be examined in detail to clarify the police station’s absurd classification of mutual negligence. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to scrutinize the entire police procedure for potential judicial misconduct. Simultaneously, contact is being made with the Ministry of Justice. There, efforts will be made to urgently file a compensation claim for the accident victim. The operators of the portal made it clear that laws will not be bent in favor of local power brokers.
