BANGKOK, THAILAND – Corruption allegations are shaking Thailand’s judiciary as a top anti-corruption investigator and the former deputy police chief are reportedly involved in a significant gold bribery scandal.
Four Heavyweights Under Scrutiny
A nine-member independent investigation committee, chaired by Chavalit Issaradej, the Vice President of the Supreme Court, is focusing on four individuals in relation to substantial bribery payments. These allegations involve the exchange of massive amounts of gold as payment.
The accused include Ekawit Watcharawanku, a member of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), and Police General Surachate Hakparn, also known as “Big Joke.” Also named are Sombat Thortham, an NACC sub-commissioner, and Ekawit’s driver, Surasit Phonluean, for their alleged roles.
Gold Instead of Justice
The core of the case revolves around an alleged bribery scheme where 246 baht-weight of gold played a central role. This gold is suspected to have been exchanged for dereliction of duty.
The committee has now formally charged all four individuals with dereliction of duty in connection with the alleged gold bribery. This marks a critical step in the unfolding investigation.
Parallel Proceedings Against “Big Joke”
For Police General Surachate Hakparn, the gold-related accusation is not his sole legal challenge. The former powerful figure in the Thai police is already facing another ongoing investigation.
The NACC itself is investigating him for allegedly receiving benefits from the operation of illegal online gambling websites. This adds another layer of scrutiny to his affairs.
No Verdict Yet
Despite the grave nature of the accusations, the investigation committee is emphasizing a crucial legal principle. These are formal charges, not a guilty verdict.
Currently, none of the four accused have been convicted. They are legally entitled to present their defense against the allegations before any final decision is made.
Next Round in July
The case is now moving into a pivotal phase where all parties involved will have to provide their statements to the independent investigation committee. The next session is scheduled for mid-July 2569 (2026), when the alleged bribe recipients will be expected to present their defense.
