BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand is enhancing its drone defense capabilities as Cambodia receives new tanks from China, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul asserting full defense readiness while downplaying the tanks as an immediate threat.
39 Chinese Tanks for Cambodia
The initial shipment of 39 T-59D battle tanks from China has arrived in Cambodia. Approximately 90 more vehicles are expected to follow under an existing defense agreement between Phnom Penh and Beijing. This delivery arrives amid ongoing border and maritime disputes between the two nations. While a ceasefire in December 2025 has halted significant fighting, the underlying conflicts remain unresolved.
Anutin: “We Have No Right to Interfere”
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul adopted a calm demeanor following a meeting of the National Security Council. “They are on their own territory, in their own homes. We have no right to know about this or interfere with it,” he stated on Monday. The Prime Minister also clarified, “We are prepared to defend our territory and assure everyone that no one will enter or invade our country.” Thailand confirmed it would closely monitor any developments impacting its national security.
Security Council Met for Four Hours
The meeting, led by Anutin, commenced at 2:20 PM at Government House and was the fourth session of the National Security Council for 2026. Attendees included Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Justice Minister Police General Ruddhaphol Naowarat, and Minister Chaiyanok Chidchob. The council, along with Secretary-General Chatchai Bangchawad and military commanders, assessed the border situation, UNCLOS mechanisms from 1982, and emerging drone threats. The session concluded at 4:10 PM.
Hun Sen Apologizes for Too Much Trust
Cambodia’s Senate President and acting Head of State, Hun Sen, had previously caused a stir with his expressed intention to reclaim disputed territories from Thailand. He apologized to citizens for the delayed acquisition of weapons. “I trusted Thailand too much,” Hun Sen admitted, acknowledging a delay in military procurement. These comments were made during a visit with displaced civilians in Banteay Meanchey province on June 9.
Cambodia Denies Incitement to Violence
Spokesperson Chea Thyrith promptly refuted claims made by Thai media, stating that Hun Sen had not announced any military actions and his remarks were not an indication of armed intent. “Building military capacity in this way is not a threat to anyone. It is part of self-defense,” Hun Sen himself clarified. He asserted that Cambodia does not threaten anyone and does not have a habit of invading other countries.
Defense Minister Deems Tanks Obsolete
Thailand’s Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Adul Boonthumjaroen, confirmed intelligence monitoring of the tank transfer. He noted that the T-59D tanks were part of an agreement dating back years, with joint military exercises between the two countries ongoing since 2016. He characterized the vehicles as outdated older platforms that would not shift the military balance. The tanks had arrived at a Cambodian port but had not been moved near the border.
Drone Center in Response to New Warfare
Concurrently, Thailand is accelerating the development of its own drone defense capabilities, with the Security Council discussing plans for a national center for drone management and defense before the cabinet meeting on Tuesday. This center aims to consolidate military and civilian agencies, coordinate drone operations, and bolster responses to aerial threats. Modern conflicts highlight the increasing criticality of unmanned systems for reconnaissance and attacks.
Anxious Wait for the Next Step
Secretary-General Chatchai Bangchawad described the security situation as fragile but under control, with communication channels between local authorities of both countries remaining active to de-escalate incidents. It remains uncertain whether Cambodia’s tank acquisition will further fuel tensions or is merely a routine matter. Meanwhile, Thailand is bolstering its drone defenses, closely observing every move across the border.
