UTHAI THANI, Thailand – A 17-year-old student was attacked on her way to school, sustaining fatal injuries.

Early on the morning of June 12, 2026, Nong Namwan was on her usual motorcycle journey to school. Her father, who had sent her off, quickly sensed something was wrong when she didn’t turn as usual. Instead, he heard desperate cries for help.
“Help me,” the 17-year-old screamed as she ran towards her father. The attacker, with a covered face, fled across the street, leaving the seriously injured girl behind.

Police reconstructed the crime scene. The perpetrator, identified as Mr. Iang, has been arrested in connection with the attack. Authorities are currently conducting an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Nong Namwan succumbed to her severe injuries shortly afterward at a health center located just 1.8 kilometers from the crime scene.

Police apprehended the suspect on the evening of the attack. At the scene, officers discovered the perpetrator’s shoes, which were later positively identified by his own father. Blood-stained gloves, clothing, and a lanyard with blood traces were also secured.
The suspect’s aunt provided the crucial confession. Mr. Iang had admitted to her immediately after the act: “I just stabbed someone this morning.” During interrogation, the man eventually broke down and confessed to the crime.

The accused stated that his intention was to rape Nong Namwan. Police are now examining reports suggesting that Mr. Iang may have sought victims via Facebook and had also viewed the profile of another young woman.
However, investigators currently believe this was his first offense committed following this pattern. The exact circumstances of victim selection are still being investigated.

At a press conference on June 14, Mr. Iang raised his hands in a wai, bowed to the father of the deceased student, and silently asked for forgiveness. The father uttered only one sentence, short and ice-cold: “May you die in prison.”
The moment was filled with grief and disbelief. The suspect’s father was also present and stated that his son had been mentally unstable since childhood, but had never used drugs.

Mr. Iang has a significant criminal record. In 2009, he was imprisoned for a year and 12 months for rape and unlawful confinement. In 2013, he received an eight-year sentence for robbery, from which he was released in 2019.
In 2021, a court convicted him again: three years and 12 months for the kidnapping of a child under 15 years old, along with a 500 Baht fine. He was released on October 23, 2025, only eight months prior to this incident.

Investigators found no evidence of drug use on the day of the attack. Nevertheless, doubts remain. Due to the suspect’s prior history, police are continuing to investigate whether drugs played a role in the crime.
Deputy Commander of the Provincial Police, Major General Worawat Mali, confirmed that the background of the attack is still under investigation. Mr. Iang is in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
