Couple Arrested for Abandoning Baby

Swedish man and African-American woman arrested in Udon Thani after newborn found deceased.

UDON THANI, Thailand – A shocking case is shaking Thailand as a foreign couple stands accused of abandoning their newborn, leading to the infant’s death.

The 39-year-old Swedish man and the 29-year-old African-American woman were captured on surveillance footage placing the baby under a rain tree on June 10th at 9:20 AM. It wasn’t until 5:30 PM that someone discovered the unconscious infant, who was already showing blue-green discoloration. A police officer immediately began resuscitation, but medical professionals were unable to save the baby, and the infant died in the hospital.

Seven Hours Until Discovery

Investigators located the couple a day later on June 11th around 1:00 PM. Officers raided their hotel room in the Nong Bua Community, and the arrest proved tumultuous. The Swedish national reportedly resisted arrest vigorously, requiring officers to physically restrain him and escort him to the Udon Thani police station. The woman wept and immediately denied abandoning the child.

Prayers Instead of Statements

At the police station, the situation grew more peculiar. The couple requested permission to recite religious chants, which investigators described as cult-like incantations. Since their arrest, the suspects have maintained complete silence. They refuse to acknowledge arrest warrants, provide answers, or even consent to a drug test, categorically denying all accusations.

Visa Expired Since March

A check revealed that both individuals have been illegally in Thailand, with their visas expiring in March. The woman reportedly gave birth to the child approximately two weeks prior in Nong Khai. Days later, the infant was left under the tree in the Udon Thani area. Police are currently investigating on suspicion of murder and child abandonment resulting in death.

Psychiatrists to Provide Clarity

Investigators have ordered psychiatric evaluations for both suspects. It remains unclear if the couple is fit to stand trial until the results are available. Additionally, officers are awaiting the autopsy and DNA tests to definitively confirm the identity of the deceased girl and determine the exact cause of death.

Diplomats Involved

This case has drawn considerable attention, prompting the police to inform the embassies of both countries. Diplomatic representatives are expected to participate in the ongoing investigation. The outcomes of the forensic examinations will be crucial for all future steps and any potential charges. The deceased infant is currently in the care of the forensic medical examiner’s office.
