Drunk driver responsible for child's death, mother injured

LAMPANG, THAILAND – A father’s life has been shattered after a drunk driver crashed into a cafe, killing his two-year-old son and severely injuring his wife.

A Father at the End of His Strength

The father, 58-year-old Phuwanat Chomphuphan, remains in disbelief following the tragic events. His son, Nong Termfun, who was considered a miracle after years of childlessness, was laid to rest on June 10th. During the burial ceremony, the grieving father whispered words of peace to his child’s small coffin.

The driver responsible for the accident has attempted to contact the family. However, the father has refused any meetings, stating he is psychologically devastated and cannot face the driver at this time.

Three Years of Abstinence – Then Tragedy Struck

The family faced significant challenges in conceiving a child. The father had made a vow to Abbot Kruba Kaew at Wat Pa Duang Kaeo Phothiyan, promising to abstain from smoking for three years. This sacrifice led to the birth of their longed-for son.

Just recently, on May 28th, the child had celebrated his second birthday with an outing to the Chiang Mai Zoo. On the day of the accident, the father had taken his car for repairs. His wife and young son were waiting at a nearby cafe.

A Cry for His Son in Shock

When the father arrived to pick them up, coffee in hand, he witnessed a white car speeding towards the group. He found his wife unconscious on the floor, and in a panic, searched for their son. He discovered the lifeless child near a car tire and immediately picked him up.

Initially, the child appeared uninjured. However, a doctor later revealed the full extent of the tragedy: the boy suffered severe internal injuries as a result of the impact. The mother continues to receive treatment in the hospital.

Monk Issues a Grim Warning

Kruba Kaew, the respected abbot to whom the parents had prayed for a child, personally visited the accident site. He performed a water blessing for the boy’s soul to find peace. The abbot knew the child well, as the family visited the temple annually for his birthday.

Nong Termfun was such a lovable child that everyone adored him, the monk stated. His death, the abbot lamented, was solely due to someone driving under the influence. He expressed hope that this death serves as a brutal warning to all and prevents future tragedies.

Police Announce Harsh Charges

Police Colonel Komsan Bamrungyot, head of the Mueang Lampang Police Station, confirmed that legal proceedings are underway. The driver is expected to face charges including negligent homicide, property damage, assault, and drunk driving. Investigations will continue to determine if additional charges apply.

Given the charge of negligent homicide, the case will proceed to court after the investigation concludes. Police have pledged to ensure justice for both parties. They are currently awaiting the completion of funeral arrangements and the mother’s release from the hospital.

Office Dismisses Village Headman

The accident also carries severe professional consequences for the driver. District Chief Thanarat Saithep has immediately established an investigative committee. The accused is scheduled to appear on June 12th, 2026, to provide a statement and review the evidence.

The committee will then recommend disciplinary action. The driver’s actions, including driving under the influence, constitute a gross violation of his official duties. Consequently, he is expected to lose his position as deputy village headman. Upon the Governor of Lampang Province ordering his dismissal, his monthly allowance of 8,000 Baht will also cease.
