SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – A Thai national working illegally in South Korea woke up in an immigration office after a night of heavy drinking, now facing deportation. The unusual case gained attention when a Thai friend posted a desperate plea for help on social media, though the post was later removed following significant ridicule.
Drunk and Asleep in a Taxi
The man had reportedly consumed alcohol before falling unconscious in a taxi. The driver was unable to awaken him and consequently transported him to the nearest police station.
However, the man did not wake up at the police station. Instead, he later found himself in an immigration office in Gwangju, an apparent consequence of his illegal employment being quickly discovered.
Desperate Rescue Attempt Fails
A Thai woman residing in South Korea attempted to secure his release by posting a bond. She shared photos of the prepared cash, but unfortunately, she did not reach the police station in time.
She shared her distress, stating:
I don’t know what to say. Let this not happen again. He was drunk and was put in a taxi. The driver could not wake him so he took him to the police station. Later he woke up in an immigration office. I am so sorry I could not help you in time. We will see each other in Thailand then.
Shortly after, she deleted the post entirely and later posted a message sharply criticizing those who mocked the situation.

Internet users from Thailand reacted with mixed emotions. Many found the story highly amusing and flooded the post with sarcastic comments.
Others called for clear consequences for illegal labor. The woman later strongly criticized those making light of the situation, emphasizing it as a serious matter.
South Korea Intensifies Controls Against Illegal Workers
This incident occurs amid significantly tightened controls for Thai arrivals. South Korea has recently imposed work restrictions on individuals from four provinces.
The affected provinces are Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, and Maha Sarakham. Scrutiny is particularly high in the agriculture and fishing sectors, as many workers have allegedly left their employers for higher wages elsewhere.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Appeals for Reason
Anutin Charnvirakul, the Thai Prime Minister, stated that such problems arise from individual misconduct. He urged Thai workers abroad to strictly adhere to local laws.
He emphasized this is the only way to prevent further restrictions. However, these words offer little solace to the man now in the immigration office, who faces imminent deportation.
