SAWI, CHUMPHON – A foreigner on the run from police died in a deadly shootout inside a cave in southern Thailand.
The Hell Hunt: Deadly Firefight in the Cave
At 12:30 p.m. on 28 April, tragedy struck in Chumphon province. Numerous officers, including Police Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Bunkoet, cordoned off a cave in the Sawi district.
Inside, a man aged about 30 to 35 was hiding. He had previously terrorized villages and was wanted under an arrest warrant. The cave became a deadly trap.
Machete, Drugs and a Homemade Weapon
At the cave entrance, officers discovered a black bag containing a machete, a pan, a hat, a headlamp, and a mobile phone. Alongside these were three drug pills and a short-barreled homemade pistol.
The weapon was loaded. An empty cartridge casing was still in the barrel – the fatal shot had already been fired, costing a human life.
Tear Gas and a 20-Minute Rescue Struggle
The arrest operation was dramatic. Officers first tried for hours to persuade the man to surrender. When he did not respond, they deployed tear gas.
The desperate suspect suddenly fired a shot at the police. The officers returned fire – the man was fatally hit. Due to the acrid tear gas odor, the recovery from the eight-meter-deep, narrow cave took over 20 minutes.
Two Weeks of Terror – A Whole Village in Fear
The slain man, a member of the Karen ethnic group from Myanmar, was no stranger. Fourteen days earlier, he had committed several burglaries in Village Number Six and injured the owners.
In his hideout, the village head later found 170 drug pills and seven more rounds of ammunition. Through social media, village chiefs warned the population and hunted the constantly armed fugitive for days.
A Village Breathes Easier, But Violence Leaves Scars
After the criminal’s death, peace finally returns to Villages Four and Six of Thung Raya. No armed offender roams the streets any longer, sending people into panicked fear.
Yet the bang of the fatal shot will echo for many involved for a long time. A life was extinguished – even if it was that of a serious criminal. The terror for the village is over, leaving behind the bitter certainty that the rule of law is defended even with the harshest means.
