Russian tourist dies after Phuket fall

Police opened an investigation after a 22-year-old Russian man died following a fall from a residential complex in Phuket’s Wichit district.

PHUKET, THAILAND – A 22-year-old Russian man died after a fall from a residential complex in Phuket, prompting a police investigation.

Police alerted in Wichit district

On Monday evening, an emergency call reached the police in the Wichit district. A foreign tourist had reportedly fallen inside a residential complex and was found on the ground at the base of the building.

Rescue teams were dispatched immediately to the scene. The man received first aid before being transported to Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, where he died shortly after arrival.

Victim’s identity confirmed

Authorities identified the deceased as Valeilev Ignevich, a 22-year-old Russian national. Further personal details, such as the purpose of his trip or the length of his stay in Thailand, remained unknown.

Officials confirmed the death after emergency treatment in the intensive care unit had been completed. An official notification was sent to the Russian embassy the same evening.

Cause of death still unclear

Wichit police opened a formal investigation into the case. Whether the fall resulted from an accident, suicide, or third-party involvement was the subject of ongoing inquiries.

Forensic specialists from Vachira Phuket Hospital were called in to assist. An autopsy was ordered to determine the precise cause of death, and evidence collection at the scene continued into the night.

International authorities involved

In addition to local officers, the tourist police were brought into the case. Coordination with Russian authorities was being handled through the embassy in Bangkok.

Under Thai law, deaths of foreign nationals require a coordinated response between national agencies and diplomatic missions. The procedure followed in this case corresponded to the usual protocol for such incidents.

Safety in high-rise complexes

Falls from high-rise apartments in Thailand’s tourist regions have regularly occupied the authorities. In Phuket and Pattaya, several unexplained cases occur each year, in which alcohol, disorientation or acute psychological distress are examined as possible contributing factors.

Forensic results in the current case had not yet been released. Police stated they would issue an official statement once the autopsy had been completed and the findings evaluated.
