PATTAYA, THAILAND – Two children were injured when a drunk motorcycle rider crashed into a stationary car on Pattaya North Road in the early hours of 29 March 2026.
Accident on North Road
The collision occurred at about 12:40 a.m. near the entrance to Sukhumvit Road. The motorcycle rider, a 38-year-old woman from Nonthaburi, rode into the back of a stationary car. Rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Center and a medical team from Pattaya Padmakun Hospital were alerted.
According to police, the 39-year-old car driver had been waiting at a red traffic light when the motorcycle approached from behind at high speed. His vehicle was damaged on the rear left side. He was not injured.
Two children taken to hospital
Two children were on the motorcycle in addition to the rider: an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl. Both were treated by rescue personnel at the scene and then transported to a hospital.
Neither the mother nor the children were wearing helmets. Detailed information on the exact nature of the children’s injuries was not yet available at the time of reporting.
Rider under the influence of alcohol
An alcohol test showed that the 38-year-old rider was under the influence at the time of the accident. She initially refused medical treatment. Police officers secured the scene and documented how the crash had happened.
The woman was questioned by police after receiving first aid. Details on any arrest or further measures against the rider were not available by the time the report was completed.
Investigation launched
Police opened an investigation on suspicion of negligent bodily harm and driving under the influence of alcohol. Witness statements and evidence from the accident site were being evaluated.
In Thailand, driving under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offence. If the blood alcohol level exceeds 50 mg/100 ml, offenders face fines, driving licence suspension or imprisonment. Carrying children on a motorcycle without protective gear can lead to additional criminal consequences.
Road safety in Pattaya
Drink-driving remained a recurring problem in the Pattaya region. Police and authorities regularly carried out checkpoints, particularly during night-time hours. Nevertheless, the number of alcohol-related accidents stayed high.
Wearing helmets is legally required in Thailand for all motorcycle riders and passengers. The rule also applies to children, but is often not followed in practice.
