BANGKOK, THAILAND – A foreign tourist’s viral video reignited debate over prices, cleanliness and service in Thailand’s tourism sector, drawing mixed reactions from local social media users.
Video shared widely online
The woman described in a clip her experiences from two weeks of travel and said the reality had not matched her expectations from previous online reviews. She contrasted her own impressions with what she had read before the trip.
The video was later reposted by local news portal TravelNews, which helped it reach a wider audience. Thai users then began to discuss her claims in lengthy comment threads.
Dispute over costs and 600-baht hostels
As an example, the tourist highlighted accommodation prices, saying the cheapest hostel she had found cost 600 baht per night. She considered this too expensive for backpackers on a low budget.
In the discussion under the reposted video, some users countered that prices in Thailand varied greatly by location, season and standard. They argued that budget decisions significantly shaped the overall travel experience.
Food criticism: hygiene, stomach issues and taste
On food, the traveller said she had heard from people around her about diarrhoea and food poisoning after eating Thai dishes.

She also reported feeling bloated after meals and described the food overall as predominantly sweet and oily.

Major destinations were overcrowded, she said, especially islands that she portrayed as typical tourism hotspots. She described longed-for natural escapes turning into busy, crowded places.
According to her, this meant she neither felt truly close to nature nor found the peace and quiet she had hoped for.
“I didn’t feel really connected to nature or find the calm I was looking for on the islands.”
said the tourist.
Transport, tone and the ‘land of smiles’ image
The woman was also sharply critical of public transport and said service orientation had sometimes been lacking. She argued that several encounters did not match Thailand’s image as the “land of smiles”.
She claimed individual locals had shouted at her, particularly people working in public transport.
“Some locals yelled at me, especially those working in public transport.”
said the traveller.
Trash, smells and questions over responsibility
The tourist said she had seen piles of rubbish in many areas and complained about unpleasant smells. She linked these observations to broader concerns about cleanliness.
She also said she had watched people leave waste behind in natural areas and questioned why anyone would pollute their own country in this way.
“I saw people leaving rubbish in natural spots and I wondered why you would dirty your own country like that.”
said the visitor.
Thai reactions: partial agreement and firm pushback
In the comments, some Thai users agreed with parts of the criticism and compared their own trips to countries such as Vietnam and China. They wrote that private hotel rooms there were sometimes available for 600 to 700 baht per night.
Others pointed out that accommodation with good views and facilities in high-demand areas in Thailand was significantly more expensive. They cited prices of over 3,000 baht per night and stressed that higher standards naturally came with higher costs.
Traveller’s verdict: visit once, but not stay
In her conclusion, the woman acknowledged that Thailand had beautiful places but called its tourism “overrated” and said other destinations were, in her view, more attractive.
“Thailand has beautiful spots, but tourism here is overrated and I find other destinations nicer.”

At the same time, she advised travel enthusiasts to visit Thailand at least once to form their own opinion. She added that she did not understand why some people spent months or even years in the country.
“You should come at least once and decide for yourself, but I don’t understand why some people stay here for months or years.”
