PATTAYA, THAILAND – A bystander’s intervention stopped a suspected daytime pickpocket attempt on a foreign tourist on Second Road, captured in a video now circulating in local media.

According to the person who filmed the incident, the episode occurred recently around lunchtime near Soi 6, a busy stretch with heavy foot traffic. The footage, recorded in broad daylight, showed an alleged attempt to steal from a foreign visitor on the street. In an area where tourists often carry bags and waist pouches, the clip reignited debate over petty crime in the beach resort.
The cameraman – a helper under a pseudonym
The 38‑year‑old local resident, who identified himself to the media as “Mr. Suea”, said he started recording after noticing a recurring, suspicious pattern of behavior. He remained anonymous in interviews, with his face blurred in the material distributed to outlets. He described his motive as a desire to warn others about similar situations in the city.
Conspicuous pattern at the crosswalk
Mr. Suea reported that he had observed a transgender woman with long bronze‑blond hair repeatedly crossing back and forth at a pedestrian crossing during red phases. He said she appeared to target foreign visitors standing close by, especially those carrying visible luggage or wearing a waist bag.
Hand on the waist bag – zipper opened
When a male foreign tourist allegedly became the focus, the person reportedly moved in very close, sought body contact and clung to him in what looked like a flirtatious manner. In the video, the filmer said it could be seen how both hands moved around the man’s waist area. He stated that the zipper of the tourist’s waist bag was eventually opened.
Intervention, escape and brief detention
The bystander then stepped in, warned the tourist and stopped the suspected attempt, after which the woman immediately backed away and disengaged. She fled in a Songthaew, but was briefly held, according to people at the scene, until police arrived, while the tourist had already left the area.
Police – no loot, no complaint, release
Officers classified the case as an incomplete theft because nothing had been taken and no victim remained on site to give a statement or file a complaint. Police also said they had been informed the woman had been released from prison just one day earlier, and that the long blond hair was a wig, as inmates are required to have their heads shaved while in custody.
Warning about tactics – and a reputational issue
The filmer said he shared the video with media because Pattaya had seen repeated reports of similar offences in which tourists were robbed through close proximity, distraction or physical contact. Authorities in such cases pointed to increased presence and cooperation with residents, while stressing a basic rule: valuables should be kept close and any suspicious activity should be reported immediately.
He noted that such clips could undermine trust in a holiday destination but also highlight how quickly a moment of distraction could turn into an open bag.
