PATTAYA, THAILAND – Pattaya City temporarily closed the Western Railway Road to rehabilitate the deteriorated carriageway and improve traffic safety.
What the project covered
Pattaya City announced a comprehensive road surface rehabilitation on the Western Railway Road, a key link between residential areas and Highway 36. The city assigned Bangsaen Mahanakhon Co., Ltd. to refurbish the stretch from the Huay Yai junction to Highway 36.
According to the announcement, the work formed part of a broader effort to upgrade an aging roadway used by both local and through traffic. Authorities stated that the project was intended to deliver a more durable surface and smoother journeys once completed.
Timeline and full closure
The city said the closure of Western Railway Road would run from 10 March to 31 March 2026, as construction was scheduled along the entire section. Officials noted that traffic would not be able to pass during this period because of the way the work was organized.
A road recycling method was used for the rehabilitation, which, according to the city, made a temporary full closure necessary. The procedure required space for machinery and materials, leaving no room for safe partial traffic flow.
Construction phases
In the first phase, crews worked on the section from the Chaiyaphon Withi junction to Nong Ket Yai. This segment marked the starting point of the staged rehabilitation along the corridor.
Later phases were planned to extend toward Highway 36 and then further to the Huay Yai junction. The city indicated that this step‑by‑step approach allowed equipment and crews to move progressively along the route.
Partial reopening before the main shutdown
Authorities reported that the stretch between the Nong Ket Noi and Nong Ket Yai junctions was close to completion. Work there already included the application of asphalt concrete.
The city expected this section to reopen to traffic on 9 March 2026. That partial reopening was intended to ease congestion before the broader closure from 10 March.
Detours toward Chonburi
Motorists heading toward Chonburi were advised by the city to turn off early at railway crossings or side streets before the Nong Ket Yai junction to divert via Sukhumvit Road. This recommendation was aimed at reducing pressure on the closed corridor.
At the same time, the city asked that public buses and heavy trucks avoid these diversion routes. Turning and maneuvering in the narrow side streets were considered too risky for larger vehicles and could create additional hazards.
City’s appeal to road users
Pattaya City apologized for the disruption caused by the works. It urged drivers to plan their journeys in advance to minimize delays.
The administration also called on road users to follow traffic signs and instructions from officials strictly to prevent accidents and extra congestion.
