BANGKOK, THAILAND – Authorities issued an official warning of severe summer thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain, hail and possible lightning strikes for 62 provinces across Thailand, including the capital Bangkok.
Weather situation and warning
The central disaster prevention command center released the alert after a notice from the national meteorological department about upcoming summer storms in the upper part of the country. The critical weather conditions were expected to affect mainly the northern, northeastern and central regions between Tuesday and Friday.
According to the technical assessment, a high-pressure system carrying cooler air from China was set to meet hot air masses over the upper country and an approaching western trough. Experts said this combination could trigger intense convective storms capable of producing severe local weather.
Assessment by authorities
The director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention, Theeraphat Kachamat, said on Sunday that all 62 provinces in the north, northeast and central regions could be affected by the unstable conditions, explicitly including Bangkok and surrounding areas.
This clash of temperature contrasts and large-scale airflows increased the risk of thunderstorms with strong gusts, heavy rainfall and isolated hail, Kachamat stressed. He underlined that people in exposed locations should closely follow official updates during the risk period.
Preparedness of emergency services
The central command reported that regional and provincial disaster prevention units had been placed on alert. They were instructed to monitor the weather closely and to pass on official warnings to local communities as early as possible.
Special rapid-response teams with equipment to remove fallen trees and secure damaged buildings were to be pre-positioned in particularly vulnerable areas. This measure aimed to ensure a swift intervention if severe storms caused structural damage or blocked roads.
Guidance for the public and agriculture
The public was urged to follow official weather reports and instructions from the authorities carefully and to secure homes and loose objects in advance of the storms. People were advised to stay away from open areas, large trees, billboards and unstable structures during thunderstorms to reduce the risk of injury.
For agriculture, officials recommended using support structures and windbreak systems so that sensitive crops would be better protected from strong gusts and heavy precipitation. Farmers in exposed fields were asked to check protective installations before the onset of the forecast storms.
