PHUKET, THAILAND – A 58-year-old Australian tourist died in Patong after a street altercation that led to the arrest of a Swedish man on charges of assault causing death.
Altercation on Prachanukhro Road
The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. in front of a building in Soi Siriland, off Prachanukhro Road in Patong. A 58-year-old Australian visitor became involved in a dispute with a younger man, which escalated into a physical confrontation.
The suspect allegedly struck the Australian with a single blow. The victim received immediate medical attention following the incident.
Death after medical treatment
Rescue workers transported the man to Patong Hospital, from where a transfer to Vachira Phuket Hospital was planned. His death was recorded at 10:23 p.m.
The Australian embassy was informed and notified the victim’s relatives. Consular officials began coordinating with local authorities following the confirmation of his death.
Police review surveillance footage
Patong police, led by Lieutenant Colonel Chanan Mekchai, secured evidence at the scene and examined nearby surveillance camera recordings. The footage showed a foreign man on a black Honda X-ADV 750 motorcycle with Phuket license plates near the location of the altercation.
Investigators traced the suspect to an apartment in Kathu. Officers found the man there and arrested him. He admitted to having been involved in the confrontation.
Arrest and statement of the suspect
Police identified the detained man as Pektus Tugui Tayar (29), a Swedish national. He told officers he had struck the Australian but denied any intent to kill. According to his account, he delivered only a single punch.
Authorities charged Tayar with assault causing death. He was placed in pre-trial detention, and legal proceedings were initiated.
Identity of the victim and consular steps
The victim was identified as Alan Roger Jolliffe (58), an Australian citizen. He had been in Patong with his girlfriend at the time of the incident.
The Australian embassy was engaged to handle consular matters and informed Jolliffe’s family of his death. According to the embassy, it remained in contact with the Thai authorities to follow the course of the proceedings.
Official assessment by authorities
A police spokesperson said the incident was extremely worrying and could damage Phuket’s image as a safe tourist destination. Officials stated they felt obliged to review security conditions in heavily visited tourism areas.
The case formed part of a series of serious incidents in Patong. In early February, an Iraqi tourist was killed in an attack in the same area, and that investigation was still ongoing. Authorities had already announced increased security presence in major tourist hotspots.
Security situation in Phuket’s tourist areas
The fatal assault came at a time when Phuket’s authorities were particularly reliant on the safety of foreign visitors. Both the tourism authority and the police said they would use the incidents of recent weeks as a basis for reassessing the security situation.
The criminal case against Pektus Tugui Tayar was ongoing. Further developments were expected to be reported as the investigation and court proceedings advanced.
