PATTAYA, THAILAND – Preparations for the multinational military exercise Cobra Gold 2026 were in full swing in Pattaya as US military representatives coordinated security procedures with the city police.
Security talks with US military attachés
Officials from the Pattaya City Police Station and the Huai Yai Police Station received US military attachés on Wednesday to discuss details of security coordination for the exercise. The talks focused on how to organise the large-scale drill with thousands of foreign soldiers without disrupting the coastal city, which depended heavily on tourism.
Scale of the exercise and military objectives
Cobra Gold 2026 was the 45th edition of the joint exercise and was expected to bring together more than 8,000 personnel from over 30 nations, including core participants Thailand, the United States, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. The exercise aimed at close cooperation of armed forces on land, at sea, in the air, and in the domains of space and cyberspace, and included command-post drills, humanitarian and disaster relief measures, as well as combat training with amphibious landings and live-fire exercises.
Pattaya’s role and local challenges
Pattaya in Chonburi province and the nearby Huai Yai area were designated both as training locations and as centres for rest and recreation for the participating troops. In view of the high number of incoming soldiers, local authorities described a dual challenge of maintaining public safety, traffic management and order in an already heavily visited holiday destination.

In discussions with the US representatives, police reported that they had emphasised the importance of smooth coordination to avoid accidents, incidents or disruptions that could damage Pattaya’s tourism image. The agencies involved agreed to provide extensive support in security measures, law enforcement and support services so the exercise could proceed without disturbances.
Economic boost expected from visiting troops
Alongside security issues, authorities and local businesses anticipated a significant economic boost for Pattaya from the presence of international troops. The visiting soldiers were expected to contribute important revenue to the regional economy through spending on accommodation, food services and leisure activities.
