CHIANG RAI, THAILAND – A shallow magnitude 3.3 earthquake shook Mae Sai district in northern Thailand on Monday, with tremors felt across several nearby areas close to the Myanmar border.

Quake Recorded at Just 3 Kilometres Depth

The Thai Meteorological Department reported that the quake struck at a depth of only 3 kilometres, making it a relatively shallow event. Officials said the shaking was strong enough to be felt by residents in multiple subdistricts near the frontier.

Epicentre in Ban Dai Subdistrict

According to the Earthquake Observation Division, the tremor occurred on 16 February at 9:37 a.m. in Ban Dai subdistrict of Mae Sai district. The agency noted that the shallow hypocentre contributed to the fact that residents across the region noticed the shaking.

Light Magnitude, Noticeable Vibrations

The authority put the magnitude at 3.3 on the Richter scale, describing it as a light quake that typically does not cause major damage. With a depth of only 3 kilometres, even this moderate strength was sufficient to generate distinct vibrations at the surface.

Tremors Felt Across Multiple Districts

Initial reports indicated that people in Mae Fa Luang subdistrict of the district with the same name in Chiang Rai province felt the tremors. Shaking was also reported from Pong Ngam and Wiang Phang Kham subdistricts in Mae Sai district, as well as from Mae Chan in Mae Chan district.

No Immediate Reports of Damage or Injuries

Early information from the area pointed to no signs of damage or injuries, with accounts limited to vibrations noticed in houses and buildings. The province of Chiang Rai in the far north lies in a zone of known geological fault lines, making earthquake monitoring an important element of local risk prevention.
