BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s disaster agency warned of elevated sea levels and possible flooding in Bangkok and six central provinces through 18 February 2026.
Disaster agency issues alert
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued an official advisory calling on residents in Bangkok and six central provinces to exercise heightened vigilance. According to the agency, the alert covered Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram and Samut Prakan, which together with the capital lie in the particularly exposed central plain.
Sea levels to exceed critical threshold
The agency reported that morning sea levels were expected to rise to about 1.80 to 1.90 meters above mean sea level until 18 February. This was projected to exceed the region’s critical threshold by around 0.20 meters, significantly increasing the risk of riverbank overtopping.
Risks for rivers, canals and low-lying communities
The DDPM noted that the higher levels could lead to overflow along riverbanks, rising water in rivers and canals, and flooding in low-lying communities. It warned that communities outside existing flood protection barriers or in unprotected shoreline zones were especially at risk, as water could quickly enter residential and commercial areas.
Guidance for residents and businesses
The agency urged people living near waterways and water-adjacent businesses to move belongings to higher ground in good time. It also advised residents and operators to closely monitor water levels and follow official instructions from state authorities to keep damage as low as possible.
