PAI, THAILAND – A foreign tourist was rescued alive from a deep ravine in Pai Canyon after a complex rope operation that reignited debate over visitor safety at the popular natural site.
Accident on sandstone ridge
The accident occurred on the morning of 30 January 2026 at around 8:30 a.m., while the woman was walking on the sandstone formations of Kong Lan near Pai. She slipped at a steep point and fell into a deep ravine that runs below a narrow section of the canyon.
Challenging rope rescue in steep terrain
Emergency crews from the Thung Yao Subdistrict Administrative Organisation and the Pai Samakki High-Angle Rescue Team were dispatched to the hard-to-reach accident site. Because of the steep drop, rescuers had to be lowered into the ravine using special rope techniques in order to secure the injured tourist and bring her back up.
