UDON THANI, THAILAND – A 50-year-old man was critically injured after breaking through a fixed glass window and falling from the 11th floor of a city-center hotel, leaving police searching for explanations.
Early-morning emergency at city hotel
Around 6.30 a.m. on 27 January, staff at a hotel in central Udon Thani called the Mueang Udon Thani police station to report a serious incident. They said a male guest had run at full speed into a fixed glass front, shattered it and plunged down the side of the building, triggering a major emergency response. Rescue workers from Udon Thani Hospital found the man severely injured but still conscious, gave first aid on site and transported him to hospital in critical condition.
Impact through fixed glass on 11th floor
Investigating officers described a shocking scene on the 11th floor of the hotel, where a large hole gaped in the glass façade. The window could neither be opened nor slid aside, leading police to believe the man had run at it from inside with a running start. His fall ended only at the level of the fifth floor, where he came to rest on a ledge or structural element of the building.
Room search reveals book and medication
During a search of the guest’s room, investigators found a book containing Buddhist teachings. They also discovered medication whose exact purpose and prescription status initially remained unclear, raising more questions than answers. The man was identified as 50-year-old Wanchai, but nothing was yet known about his motives or mental state before the incident.
Novice monk becomes key witness
A novice from a nearby temple became the most important witness in the case. At about 5 a.m., during morning prayers, he heard a loud shattering of glass, followed shortly afterwards by a heavy thud that prompted him to alert hotel staff, who then notified the authorities.
“It was a terrible noise that broke right into the silence of the early morning,”
said the novice, who described the moments as deeply disturbing.
Investigators weigh suicide, breakdown or accident
Police said they faced a mystery as they tried to understand what had happened. They examined whether the fall was a suicidal act, a psychotic outburst or a tragic accident in a confused state, but had not yet identified a clear motive. A police spokesperson stressed that officers intended to clarify the circumstances in full and would also review the man’s health condition prior to the incident.
Parallel high-rise fall case in Pattaya
Almost at the same time, a Thai woman in Pattaya reportedly survived what was described as a near-miraculous fall from the 25th floor of a condominium. That incident was triggered by an argument with her foreign husband, highlighting, alongside the Udon Thani case, the fragile boundary between tragic misfortune and acts born of desperation. Doctors in Udon Thani continued to fight for Wanchai’s life, and his condition remained life-threatening.
