LOPBURI, THAILAND – A high-speed chase on a rural road ended with a truck in a canal and one of the year’s biggest methamphetamine seizures hidden beneath ginger.
Truck under surveillance crashes into irrigation canal
On the late afternoon of 22 January 2026, the situation escalated on a country road in Lopburi. A six-wheel truck that had been under surveillance by a special unit since departing Chiang Mai noticed it was being followed. The driver accelerated to escape but lost control shortly before the border to the neighboring district, sending the vehicle off the road and tipping it into a shallow irrigation canal.
Driver injured, officers stunned by sheer drug volume
The 42-year-old driver, identified as Somjit, was pulled from the wreck with minor injuries. The real shock followed when investigators inspected the cargo. Among sacks of fresh ginger, they discovered seven seemingly ordinary bags containing 4.8 million tablets of the stimulant methamphetamine, also known as Yaba.
Street value estimated in the hundreds of millions
Police estimated the street value of the seized pills at around 150 million baht, roughly 3.75 million euros. The haul was described as one of the largest drug finds of the year and left even seasoned officers astonished. Senior officials, including the provincial police chief, rushed to the scene to inspect the extraordinary discovery in person.
Suspect claims ignorance about drug cargo
During his first interrogation, the detained driver insisted he had only been transporting ginger and named a man called “Joe” as the person who hired him.
“It was my first job of this kind,”
said Somjit, driver. Investigators did not believe this account, pointing to the precise monitoring of the journey from the north to Bangkok as evidence of a professional drug courier.
Category 1 narcotics charge and search for masterminds
The suspect was charged with possession of a Category 1 narcotic and is now being intensively questioned about those behind the operation. Authorities aim to use information from the arrest to identify higher-level figures in the supply chain. The focus of the probe is on mapping out roles from producers to major distributors in the capital.
Targeted strike on major syndicate routes
According to investigators, the seizure was no lucky break. Surveillance by the Metropolitan Police Suppression Division indicated a targeted operation against the supply routes of large syndicates. The route from Chiang Mai in the Golden Triangle to Bangkok is considered a classic “drug highway,” and stopping a fully loaded truck on this corridor was viewed as a significant blow to the network.
Setback for traffickers, signal to the public
The successful action highlighted the increased effectiveness of Thailand’s drug enforcement units. Cooperation between local forces and specialized metropolitan teams was seen as delivering concrete results.
