PHUKET, THAILAND – An alleged German tourist calmly stole cash from a Phuket spa and distracted staff before leaving, prompting a police appeal for public help.
Calm theft caught on CCTV
On the previous afternoon at around 5 p.m., a man entered a spa on Ranong Road in the Talat Nuea area, where surveillance cameras recorded his every move. He initially sat casually with a mobile phone in his hand, then acted when the receptionist briefly escorted customers to a treatment. The footage showed him standing up, slowly opening a drawer at the reception desk, removing two 1,000‑baht notes and putting them in his pocket before sitting down again as if nothing had happened.
Distraction at the counter
According to the report, the man appeared unfazed by his surroundings and seemed to have waited for the moment when staff attention dropped. The real distraction followed when the employee returned and did not immediately react to the open drawer. Instead of leaving in a suspicious hurry, the man spoke to her and asked about spa products displayed on the counter to divert attention from the theft.
Planned act, says spa owner
The spa owner later described the suspect’s behaviour as deliberate and composed.
“He was very calm and deliberate. This was not a spontaneous theft but planned,”
said the spa owner. The man was described as wearing a black T‑shirt, red shorts and a beige cap. By asking targeted questions about the products, the suspect gained enough time to stabilise the situation and then left the shop without haste.
Police search for alleged German suspect
The spa operator immediately filed a report and published the CCTV footage on the Facebook page “Newshawk Phuket” to aid identification. Local media reported that the wanted man was believed to be a German national who had been accompanied by two other people at the time of the incident. Police asked the public to provide any information via the phone number 084-256-3965, saying the suspect remained at large.
Appeal to tourists and residents
Investigators said they hoped tourists or local residents on the island would recognise the trio, as the video provided clear images of the man. They noted that the case highlighted ongoing concerns about petty thefts involving foreign visitors. The appeal aimed to increase pressure on the suspect and encourage witnesses who might have seen him and his companions.
Growing frustration over foreign petty crime
The incident was not isolated, with another foreign man recently filmed stealing a motorcycle helmet from a parking area. In online forums, users complained that despite clear video evidence in similar cases, they had not seen successful police investigations. One frustrated resident commented:
“You report it, but nothing happens. The perpetrators feel safe,”
said a frustrated local resident.
Concerns for the island’s image
Commentators warned that this perception could damage the image of the tourist island if left unaddressed. Thai authorities were under pressure to investigate even minor offences by tourists more consistently in order to send a clear signal. Local voices suggested that visible enforcement was needed to restore a sense of security among residents and visitors.
Series of incidents with foreign suspects
Similar incidents had already been reported in December, including a foreign woman who stole snuff in Krabi and a foreign man who robbed a motorcycle taxi driver. There had been no public updates on arrests in those cases, further fuelling discontent in the local community. The accumulation of such cases continued to stir significant resentment among residents, who feared a gradual erosion of everyday security on the island.
