PHUKET, THAILAND – A tourist in Phuket filmed a stranger unlocking her hotel room with a master key, forcing the hotel to admit a staff member had handed over the universal key.
Tourist recorded attempted entry to her room
The young woman had been ill and stayed alone in her room when the doorbell rang. Looking through the peephole, she saw an unknown man in the corridor. Moments later she heard an electronic key being inserted into the lock and the door opened, but the security chain kept it slightly ajar.
In fear, the tourist grabbed her phone and began recording the scene. The video clearly showed the door being opened from the outside, capturing what would become central evidence in the case.
Hotel initially downplayed the incident
Shocked, the woman immediately informed the hotel reception about what had happened. The response left her outraged.
“The staff initially claimed that the surveillance cameras showed no one in the hallway,”
said the affected woman.
According to her account, the hotel simply ignored her clear video evidence. She was deeply angered by what she saw as a negligent reaction and the lack of any sense of security, and said she felt abandoned.
Police complaint forced admission from management
Only after the woman officially filed a complaint with the police on 17 January 2026 did the full extent of the incident emerge. Confronted with officers and the video, hotel management admitted that the key used had been a “master key,” a universal key for the property.
They further acknowledged that a hotel employee had given this master key to the unknown man. The identity of the man and the reasons for handing over the key remained unclear and were still under investigation.
Internal investigation and police probe underway
The hotel announced an urgent internal investigation to identify the responsible staff member. The central question for the hotel and authorities was who the stranger was and what he intended to do in the room of the woman traveling alone.
Police in Phuket opened an investigation into the incident. The case cast a harsh light on security gaps in a tourist hotel and raised concerns about access control and the handling of master keys.
Guest left hotel as trust collapsed
The tourist left the hotel immediately after the incident and moved to another accommodation in order to feel safe. Her holiday was effectively ruined and her trust in Thai hotels was severely shaken.
The report raised the question of whether this was an isolated case or a warning signal of a wider problem in the tourism sector, an issue now weighing on many visitors to the island.

Observers described the incident as a serious warning sign for Phuket as a tourism destination, where the safety of guests was regarded as paramount. If staff members were able to pass on master keys, any security system in a hotel became effectively worthless.
