PHUKET, THAILAND – Police confirmed that well-known businessman Jimmy Semaan died in Cherng Talay after an apparent fall from a building.
Police identify apparent suicide after days of silence
Cherng Talay police chief Col. Ekkarat Plaiduang stated that officers provisionally classified the death as suicide.
“The initial cause of death is assumed to be suicide by jumping from a building,”
said Col. Ekkarat Plaiduang, Cherng Talay police chief. Semaan, originally from Lebanon, had reportedly suffered from underlying health issues, including depression and stress, and was pronounced dead at Thalang Hospital, where the examination also took place.
Unusual information vacuum fuels speculation
The police statement confirmed one of two rumors that had circulated since Monday amid confusion over the case. Both Cherng Talay and Thalang police initially declined to issue an official report, with Thalang police chief Col. Nikorn Chuthong pointing to Cherng Talay’s jurisdiction and Cherng Talay referring inquiries to the hospital in Thalang. This unusual reticence by the authorities encouraged intense speculation on social media, where a wave of condolences had already appeared.
Prominent figure in Phuket’s business community
Semaan was a well-known figure in Phuket’s business scene and served as CEO of his own consulting firms 444 Consultants and 444 Hospitality. He also worked as managing director of the Pisona Group, headed by prominent Patong businessman Preechawude “Prab” Keesin. Colleagues, friends and the wider business community on the island were left shocked by his sudden death and spoke of a significant gap he would leave behind.
Business partner expresses shock and condolences
Keesin had already posted “RIP…JIMMY SEMAAN” on social media on Monday but said he remained stunned when speaking to The Phuket News.
“Some people said it was a heart attack, others said it was suicide,”
said Preechawude Keesin, Semaan’s business partner. He offered his deep condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, while the precise circumstances that led to the tragedy appeared unclear even to those closest to Semaan.
Case highlights taboo around mental health
The death cast a stark light on the often-taboo subject of mental health, with Semaan’s struggles with depression and stress said to have been known. Support services such as the Samaritans of Thailand (Tel.: 02-113-6789) and the Mental Health Hotline (1323) were available for people in crisis.
“It is okay not to be okay. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness,”
said counselling services, underscoring the importance of reaching out.

While police worked on the assumption of a tragic suicide, many questions remained for those who knew the successful and popular entrepreneur. Thai authorities were expected to conclude their investigation on that basis, as relatives and friends began their period of mourning. Phuket, meanwhile, lost one of its charismatic personalities, and the legacy of Jimmy Semaan was expected to live on in the island’s business community.
