PATTAYA, THAILAND – An amateur football match on an artificial pitch in South Pattaya ended in a mass brawl between players and supporters, raising concerns over fair play and safety in local sport.
Clashes after final whistle
The confrontation occurred on the evening of 6 January 2026 on a football field in Moo 10 in Nong Prue subdistrict. According to the field manager, players and fans from both sides clashed immediately after the final whistle and stormed the pitch. Videos of the scene were posted on Facebook the following day.
Viral video and online mockery
A user named Chokchip Wat Tham uploaded the clip and commented mockingly,
“They probably had to become boxers #then just quit football, scared.”
said Chokchip Wat Tham, Facebook user. The footage showed a larger scuffle on the pitch involving kicks and punches.
The field manager confirmed to reporters that both those on the field and supporters from the sidelines took part in the fight. He said the cause of the escalation remained unclear.
Heated rivalry in local 8-a-side league
The match was part of a local 8-a-side league featuring mostly teams from the Pattaya area. On the pitch, the sides “Khai Khem” (Salted Egg) and “Super” faced each other.
The game was officiated by referee Prasert Wangweng (62), who had worked in Thai football for more than 40 years, including for Pattaya clubs and in youth development. He reported that the atmosphere had been tense even before kick-off.
Insults on social media before match
According to Prasert, both teams had been trading insults on social media “since before New Year”. Before the game, a player asked him whether he could “get at them today”. Prasert said he had explicitly warned both sides that any violence would lead to an immediate stoppage.
Referee injured as fight erupts
The match itself was hard-fought from the start, the referee said, and he had to issue several yellow cards. Right after the final whistle, the situation escalated, with players from both teams attacking each other, as seen in the viral video.
When Prasert tried to intervene, he was pulled into the melee, fell to the ground and injured his right knee. As he could no longer control the situation, he withdrew and allowed the confrontation to die down.
Elders mediate after two-hour talks
Afterwards, elders from the groups were brought in to mediate behind the pitch. According to accounts from the scene, the talks lasted more than two hours before both sides settled their differences and went home.
Concern for football’s image
Referee Prasert later expressed deep disappointment, stressing that he had devoted his professional life to developing local football.

No serious injuries other than the referee’s knee injury were reported. There were no reports so far of police action or investigations.
Risks for grassroots sport
The incident illustrated how quickly emotions in lower leagues could spiral out of control when online conflicts were carried onto the pitch. Particularly problematic were heated social-media debates before matches, insufficient security concepts at small facilities, and the involvement of spectators in on-field disputes.
Local officials and organizers now faced the task of preventing similar incidents in future and enforcing clear rules on conduct on and off the pitch.
