PHUKET, THAILAND – A pre-dawn explosion at Chalong Pier triggered a massive fire that destroyed more than 20 tour speedboats and sent flames and smoke high over the bay.
Early-morning blast shatters island calm
Residents on the Thai resort island were jolted awake shortly after 4 a.m. when a powerful blast erupted at Chalong Pier. Within seconds, flames shot several meters into the air from a single speedboat, marking the start of a major blaze. Witnesses described thick black smoke darkening the sky and flames visible from the sea all the way to the Chalong Five-Way Roundabout as panic sent people into the streets.
Wind turns pier fire into chain reaction
Initial findings indicated the incident began with an explosion on one speedboat before strong sea winds spread sparks along the pier. Mooring lines caught fire and boat after boat went up in flames, rapidly escalating the situation. In a short time, at least 22 to 23 fully fueled speedboats were burning, some belonging to one private company and others to a total of 13 different operators, all prepared for morning tourist trips.
Emergency teams race to contain blaze
Police, rescue teams and firefighters from four municipalities, including Rawai, responded immediately and worked under strong winds, high waves and rising flames. In a risky maneuver, firefighters cut mooring lines and pulled boats apart in an effort to stop the fire from spreading further along the pier. The blaze was finally brought under control at daybreak, and authorities reported no injuries or fatalities.
Millions in damage, governor praises response
The material loss was described as severe, with Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthithaworn estimating damage at about 38 million baht, nearly one million euros. Each of the affected speedboats was considered a total loss, burned down to its frame. The governor commended the swift work of the emergency services,
“Without the rapid intervention, the fire could have spread to more than 1,000 other fully fueled tourist boats in the bay.”
said Nirat Pongsitthithaworn, Phuket governor.
Environmental risks and clean-up efforts
Even after the flames were extinguished, authorities warned of continuing danger from leaking oil, debris in the water and toxic residues. Officials ordered the immediate removal of the wrecks from the bay to protect the sea. Foam was also deployed to prevent the spread of fuel on the water’s surface.
Cause under investigation, safety questions linger
Forensic specialists were tasked with determining what triggered the initial explosion, with possible causes including a technical defect or negligence among the scenarios under review. The exact origin of the blast remained unclear, but officials noted the outcome could have been far worse. Tour operators and visitors were left with pressing questions over how safe the tour boats at Chalong Pier really were, even as Phuket expressed relief that a larger catastrophe had been averted.
