PICHIT, THAILAND – A dispute over money escalated into a devastating blaze that destroyed ten homes and left an entire neighbourhood in ruins.
Argument at family home sparked blaze
The fire started on Sunday morning at around 9:50 a.m. in the Khao Sai market community after 37-year-old Yutthana had a heated argument with his mother, Wanna, over money. When she refused to give him any, he allegedly flew into a rage and, under the influence of drugs, withdrew to his room.
There he is accused of setting the fire that changed everything. The family house also functioned as a cooking gas sales point, turning it into a deadly accelerator.
Gas explosions consumed entire housing block
The flames spread rapidly, fuelled by gas cylinders, and firefighters were unable to contain the blazing fireballs. An entire block of ten residential houses was consumed, leaving behind a scene of destruction and fear.
Even on Monday, firefighters were still on site in the smoking ruins to carry out mopping-up operations. The total damage was estimated at 50 million baht.
Police see deliberate arson and capital crime
Police led by Colonel Pheemphon Muangsi said they had no doubt about the cause.
“Yutthana deliberately started the fire.”
said Pheemphon Muangsi, police station chief.
The suspect was charged with intentional arson, which in Thailand is a capital offence punishable by the death penalty. During his arrest, officers found methamphetamine and a firearm in his possession, leading to additional charges.
Families left with nothing after ‘unbelievable act of revenge’
For the mother, who lost her home and small shop, her world collapsed, and the nine other families who lost everything faced the same fate. A closely knit neighbourhood was reduced to rubble by one impulsive act, leaving residents with nothing.
They now had to rebuild their lives from scratch, while the alleged perpetrator remained in pretrial detention to answer for what was described as an unbelievable act of revenge.
Deadly mix of drugs, anger and stored gas
The combination of drug use, rage and stored gas created an explosive situation that experts have repeatedly warned about. Uncontrolled aggression under the influence of drugs can lead to unpredictable acts of violence, and this case was cited as an extreme example.
The Thai justice system was expected to make an example of the case, with authorities stressing both deterrence and justice for the many innocent victims.
Tragedy as warning for wider society
The incident showed how quickly a private conflict could turn into a public catastrophe, with drugs turning people into ticking time bombs. Society, observers warned, had to remain vigilant, and the justice system needed to crack down hard to stop such fire-setters.
For the victims in Pichit, a difficult path of reconstruction now lay ahead, and their physical and emotional wounds were expected to take a long time to heal.
Questions over responsibility and missed warnings
The case also raised questions about responsibility when addiction and aggression were already known in a person’s environment. Observers asked why warning systems often only reacted when it was too late, what might have prevented the inferno, and who ultimately bore responsibility.
