PHUKET, THAILAND – An adult green sea turtle laid a large clutch of eggs on Karon Beach, turning the start of the year into a rare natural spectacle.
Rare daytime nesting draws beachgoers
Late in the morning, around 11 a.m., the turtle came ashore at Karon Beach in Karon subdistrict, Muang district on Phuket. Thai and foreign holidaymakers watched as the animal slowly emerged from the sea and searched for a suitable spot in the sand. The turtle then began laying eggs, used its rear flippers to carefully push sand over the nest and compact it, and finally returned to the sea on its own.
Lifeguards secure the nesting site
Lifeguards stationed on the beach quickly secured the nest area. They marked the site with wooden stakes and a cordon to prevent people from stepping on it and possibly damaging the eggs. The lifeguards informed the Karon municipal administration, which in turn alerted specialist agencies to clearly label and protect the site as a sensitive breeding ground.
Specialist agencies take over protection
According to the municipality, coordination was established with the Rare and Endangered Marine Animals Group under the Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre based in Wichit subdistrict, Muang district. These state bodies are responsible for marine protection and research on threatened species in the Andaman Sea. Authorities planned to monitor the nest under existing programmes for the protection of rare marine animals, including ongoing checks, safeguards against disturbance by people or animals, and adjustments to beach activities to reduce light and noise near the nest.
“The authorities will monitor and protect the nest as a contribution to ongoing measures to preserve marine biodiversity in the region.”
said a spokesperson for the agencies involved.
Signal for conservation and tourism
Green sea turtles, considered rare and endangered in the region, are seen as important indicators of coastal ecosystem health. Experts viewed the nesting at the heavily frequented Karon Beach as a sign of the ecological significance of Phuket’s shorelines. For tourism, the event was both an attraction and a responsibility, with officials aiming to combine nest protection with responsible beach operations and to avoid any disturbance that could seriously affect the development of the eggs.
