BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thai police resolved a high-profile case in which two men staged a fake operation to kidnap a Chinese citizen and demand more than 60,000 dollars in ransom.
Kidnapping Plot With Fake Elite Police Gear
The suspects, Watcharapon Pimpila (24) and Japhing Sae-Liu (23), carried out the abduction on Sunday evening outside the Samut Prakan apartment of 25-year-old Mr. Chenglong. They presented themselves as elite officers of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and claimed to be acting as part of an anti-fraud operation.
Armed with a realistic BB gas pistol, handcuffs and an electric stun device, they forced the frightened victim into a villa in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district.
“The equipment was so deceptively real that the victim saw no chance to resist,”
said an investigator.
Ransom Demands to Brother in China
Inside a room at the Pracha Rat Bamphen Villa, the kidnappers compelled Chenglong to call his brother in China. They demanded 63,300 US dollars, equivalent to about 2.3 million baht, as ransom.
In panic, the brother first transferred 12,400 dollars, around 450,000 baht. He then contacted a Thai business partner, who immediately alerted the police.
CCTV Trail Leads Police to Villa
Officers at Huai Khwang Police Station meticulously reviewed surveillance camera footage to trace the victim’s movements. The images led directly to the entrance of the villa that Chenglong had entered early Monday morning.
Later that same day, a special team raided the property, freeing the Chinese man unharmed and arresting Japhing as he stood guard over the victim.
“The operation was swift and precise. The victim was relieved but visibly shaken,”
said an eyewitness.
Confessions and Ongoing Investigation
During questioning, Japhing, who speaks Thai fluently and comes from the mountains of Chiang Mai, admitted his role in the crime. He identified his accomplice Watcharapon, who had been sleeping in an adjacent room in the villa.
Watcharapon also confessed and now faces charges of kidnapping for ransom, unlawful detention and impersonating a public official. Both principal suspects were being held in pre-trial detention at Huai Khwang Police Station, while investigators examined whether additional accomplices were involved.
Concerns Over Safety of Foreigners
Authorities acknowledged that the case sent a troubling message to the international community at a time when Thailand was seeking to attract foreign investors and tourists. Officials stressed that this was an isolated criminal act rather than a systemic problem and said the rapid resolution was intended to restore confidence.
However, investigators continued to pursue how the two men obtained such convincing police equipment. The broader incident raised questions about the misuse of uniforms and whether strict penalties alone were enough, or if better information for foreigners was needed so they could more easily recognise genuine officers.
