BANGKOK, THAILAND – A Bangkok court sentenced a heavily pregnant woman to four years in prison for killing a party entertainer she mistakenly believed was her husband’s lover.
Confrontation at Min Buri love hotel
In April, 28-year-old Worrawan, then eight months pregnant, followed her husband Bas to a love hotel in the Min Buri district, accompanied by a transgender friend. She burst into the room and found her naked husband in bed with 23-year-old Potjanart. Blinded by rage, she dragged the naked woman out of the room and repeatedly punched and kicked her until she collapsed unconscious.
Police uncover fatal misunderstanding
Police investigations later established that Potjanart was not a secret lover but worked as a party entertainer, and the hotel visit was part of her job.
“I did not want to kill her. I was just so angry and emotionally upset,”
said Worrawan, according to her statement. The victim was taken to hospital with internal injuries and died there from her wounds.
Court finds intentional killing, halves sentence
After a seven-month trial, the court ruled that Worrawan had intentionally caused the woman’s death. The judges, however, recognised the defendant’s extreme emotional state, citing jealousy and the perceived severe provocation as mitigating factors. An original sentence of eight years was halved due to her confession, leaving her to serve four years in prison.
Compensation order for victim’s family
In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a substantial financial burden on Worrawan. She was ordered to pay 850,000 baht (about 21,250 euros) in compensation to the victim’s family, plus 5 percent annual interest. The payment was intended to offer at least some financial support to the bereaved relatives.
Lives shattered on all sides
The killing left the lives of everyone involved in ruins, with a young woman dead over a misunderstanding and a family mourning their daughter. Worrawan, who has since given birth, will spend her child’s first years behind bars. Her husband Bas remains with the burden of having set the events in motion that ended in tragedy for two families.
