PHUKET, THAILAND – Police on the resort island dismantled an alleged motorcycle theft ring that had targeted both residents and tourists.
December thefts led investigators to suspected ring
Authorities at the Chalong police station announced that arrests had been made in connection with three thefts committed between 2 and 12 December, which had guided investigators to the suspected gang. The stolen motorcycles, including two electric bikes belonging to a French national, were found hidden in the Sois Vanich That and Keha 5 in Ratsada. Police said they believed the suspects were part of an organized group.
Two young suspects brought before authorities
Acting on an arrest warrant issued by the Phuket Provincial Court, officers detained a 20-year-old man known only by the alias “Dale” on 12 December. He was accused of three counts of theft in a residential building at night and of using a vehicle to flee and transport stolen property. A second suspect, a 15-year-old minor identified by the pseudonym “Dong”, was handed over to the juvenile court authorities.
Stolen motorcycles returned to rightful owners
Investigators reported that all four motorcycles involved in the current cases were recovered and returned to their lawful owners.
“The close cooperation between the local police and the provincial investigation unit was crucial for this success.”
said Police Colonel Akanit Danpitaksart, a senior investigator. Publishing photos of the seized bikes on social media produced an unexpected lead when another victim recognized a motorcycle that had been missing since 2024.
Social media tip uncovers earlier case
The owner of the red-and-white Honda Sonic collected the vehicle after presenting documentation and initiated legal action. Chalong police shared their findings with other stations on Phuket, as the investigation was still ongoing. Officers suspected that those arrested might be linked to further thefts on the island and examined the possibility of a larger network.
Heightened police presence to reassure public
The clarification of the series of thefts brought relief to locals and visitors, as the island relied heavily on motorcycles for everyday transport. Police announced they would increase their presence in affected areas to deter further crimes.
