BANGKOK, THAILAND – A Bangkok taxi driver helped a foreign tourist narrowly make his long-haul flight to Tokyo after an airport mix-up that gained viral attention online.
Tourist finds himself at the wrong airport
Social media user @QuintenFrancois described on X how he arrived at Don Mueang Airport instead of Suvarnabhumi Airport. His flight to Japan was due to depart in just over an hour, roughly the usual driving time between the two airports.
“I was at the wrong airport in Bangkok. I had to drive an hour to the right one, with the risk of missing the flight,”
said Quinten Francois, tourist.
Non-English-speaking driver takes on the “mission”
A Thai taxi driver then took on what the traveller called a rescue mission.
“The man did not understand a word of English, but he understood the mission: Get me to the other airport as quickly as possible.”
said Quinten Francois, tourist.
According to the account, the driver navigated Bangkok with dramatic speed and used shortcuts
“that Google Maps did not even know.”
said Quinten Francois, tourist.
High-speed dash through Bangkok traffic
The driver reportedly drove fast and, when necessary, used the hard shoulder to keep moving through traffic. Throughout the ride, he kept what was described as a “friendly smile” on his face.
The risky dash succeeded: the tourist reached his gate in time and departed punctually for Tokyo. The passenger later expressed deep admiration for the driver in his post.
Online praise for Bangkok’s “Gigachad”
“You don’t often meet such champions in life. It is important to reward them with great respect and a big tip.”
said Quinten Francois, tourist.
The story spread widely online and moved many internet users. Numerous comments praised the local knowledge and determination of Thai taxi drivers.
Reminder: Bangkok has two international airports
Others used the incident as a travel warning, noting that Bangkok has two international airports. They urged travellers always to triple-check the airport name before heading out.
Commenters also highlighted the episode as a positive counterexample to frequent negative headlines about taxi services. Many framed it as a showcase of Thai hospitality on the city’s busy roads.
Showcase of Thailand’s service spirit
The ride was cited as proof of the much-discussed “can-do” spirit for which Thais are often praised. Even without a shared language, the driver managed to solve the traveller’s problem.
Observers described the story as small but valuable publicity for Thai tourism, demonstrating that hospitality can sometimes appear as high-speed help on Bangkok asphalt. The unknown driver gained a devoted fan, while Thailand earned extra goodwill across social media.
