BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand opened the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok with a lavish ceremony that celebrated regional unity while underscoring tensions with neighboring Cambodia.
Royal-led opening at Rajamangala stadium
The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) were officially inaugurated at Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium, marking Thailand’s first time hosting the event in 18 years. King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida presided over the ceremony, which drew a full house of about 30,000 spectators, with all available seats quickly taken.
“We Are One” theme and cultural showcase
The evening show began at 7 p.m. under the theme “We Are One — We Are Connected by the Sea,” combining traditional Thai arts with performances contributed by the ten other participating nations. Highlights included underwater ballet, dramatic jet-ski and flyboard displays, and a Muay Thai Wai Kru performance by renowned boxer Buakaw Banchamek.

The athletes’ parade proceeded in alphabetical order, with host Thailand entering last, led by Queen Suthida, who was set to compete in the SSL47 keelboat sailing competition herself.

X-ray scanners were installed at all entrances to stadiums and accommodation facilities to control access more strictly. Officials said the enhanced screening was designed to guarantee the security of the event and support a peaceful, incident-free tournament.
