SATUN, THAILAND – Police investigated a 40-year-old man after his bedridden mother was found buried in the garage of their home, surrounded by religious symbols and lucky charms.
Neighbors alert authorities after suspicious behavior
Concerned neighbors in Manang district had noticed the 40-year-old son behaving in a way they found highly suspicious. They informed the village headman, who immediately contacted the police. Officers arrived at the house on the morning of 7 December, where the man promptly admitted that his 73-year-old, bedridden mother had been dead for three days and that he had buried her in the garage.
Ritual-style grave shocks investigators
In the shallow pit, investigators encountered a scene that left them horrified. The woman’s body was dressed in a floral top and a red sarong, with glasses placed on her nose. Beside her lay a walking stick and a red handbag, while religious symbols and amulets were visible on her skin.
A wooden door had been laid over the body as a makeshift coffin lid. On top of the grave, officers found four conifer plants and Chinese good-luck charms carefully arranged.
Son claims burial followed mother’s wishes
The son tried to justify his actions by insisting he was respecting his mother’s last request.
“She said that when she dies, her body must not be taken to the temple.”
said the son, according to police.
Officers expressed serious doubts about this explanation. They noted that the elaborate and ritual-like arrangement of the grave raised more questions than it answered, including whether this was truly her final wish or an attempt to cover up a crime.
Relative recounts lies about Bangkok trip
The victim’s younger sister, known as Tante Lin, was overwhelmed with grief and disbelief.
“I never thought I would find my sister again like this.”
said Tante Lin, in tears.
For weeks, the man had misled the family by claiming that his bedridden mother had
“traveled to Bangkok with relatives.”
said the sister, describing the story as absurd.
She questioned how such a trip could ever have happened.
“How could she travel? She was bedridden!”
she asked in despair.
Suspect charged as police pursue all motives
The son was treated as a prime suspect and was known to have a history as a drug user who had been in treatment. In recent months he had been living with his mentally ill mother, and they reportedly argued frequently. Investigators said they were not ruling out any possible motive.
For the time being, he was charged with concealment of a corpse. An autopsy was ordered to determine whether the woman had died of natural causes or whether violence had been involved, a question that was expected to weigh on the small community in Satun for a long time.
