PATTAYA, THAILAND – A rare baby tapir born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi has prompted a public naming contest lasting until late November 2025.
The female tapir, born on September 28, 2025, is the offspring of a 14-year-old father named New Year and a 12-year-old mother named Tulya, according to Zoo Director Narongwit Chotchoi. The zoo, which lies near Pattaya, has invited the public to choose between three name options: Moon Thong, Taeng Thai, or Maple.
Voting open until November 25
Visitors can cast their votes through an official online form until 4:30 p.m. on November 25, 2025. The zoo has released the voting link across its social media channels, encouraging participation from animal supporters across Thailand.
Prizes for participants
Participants in the vote will enter a random draw for prizes to be distributed after the contest closes, including:
- One main cash prize of 3,000 Baht
- Two “Moo Deng Club” memberships offering free zoo admission
- One commemorative Moo-Deng blanket
Winners and the selected name will be announced on November 28, 2025, through the zoo’s official Facebook page.
Healthy start for mother and calf
Veterinarians confirmed that both tapirs are in excellent health, observing the calf’s strong appetite and early attempts to explore its surroundings inside the protected enclosure. Staff noted that Tulya remained watchful and allowed keepers to approach only with caution, to avoid stress and to support bonding.
Conservation milestone
Located in Chonburi Province, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo is recognized nationally for its wide, natural-style habitats. The facility sees the arrival of this newborn tapir as a meaningful contribution to species conservation in Southeast Asia, where tapirs face increasing habitat loss.
