PATTAYA, THAILAND – On 14 February 2024, local officials in Khao Maikaew met representatives of the Belgian festival brand Tomorrowland to discuss plans for a possible 2026 edition in Thailand. The meeting at the Khao Maikaew Subdistrict Administrative Organization hall marked the first formal step toward bringing one of the world’s most recognized electronic music festivals to Asia.
Early planning meeting in Chonburi
At the meeting, Jamnian Keetipakun, President of the Khao Maikaew Subdistrict Administrative Organization, reviewed site suitability, road access, accommodation capacity and compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Jamnian told participants: “KHAO MAIKAEW IS READY TO BECOME A CENTER OF MUSIC TOURISM THAT CREATES JOBS, BUILDS LOCAL INCOME, AND BRINGS WORLD-CLASS EXPERIENCES TO THAI AUDIENCES.” Officials recorded discussions on how the Wisdom Valley Khao Maikaew site, located about 20 kilometers from Pattaya City, could host tens of thousands of visitors during the proposed Tomorrowland 2026 festival.
Organizers survey Wisdom Valley site
Following the meeting, a Tomorrowland planning team toured the sprawling Wisdom Valley property, which covers several hundred thousand square meters. The delegation evaluated transportation links via Route 36 and proximity to U-Tapao Airport, located roughly 40 minutes away. Local business owners from Banglamung District joined the team to outline potential accommodation and catering services capable of serving large international crowds. Participants noted that Chonburi Province, whose tourism numbers rose by over 6 million visitors in 2023, offers the infrastructure needed for high-volume festival operations.
Economic hopes for Chonburi
A report presented during the meeting projected that hosting Tomorrowland could generate more than THB 2 billion in direct tourism revenue and create hundreds of temporary jobs. Jamnian Keetipakun emphasised the potential benefits during a press briefing in Pattaya City Hall on 15 February 2024, stating that the event could strengthen Thailand’s creative economy and international cultural appeal. He added that local institutions, including the Chonburi Provincial Tourism Office, have already begun identifying training programs for event staff if the project proceeds.
Environmental and safety obligations
Authorities discussed strict requirements to match global festival standards. Municipal officers in Banglamung confirmed that any final license would demand detailed plans for waste management, water supply, and crowd control. Tomorrowland organizers told local officials they would conduct environmental impact assessments within six months and submit full documentation by late 2024. Among the proposed safety measures were:
– 24-hour medical units with certified emergency teams
– Real-time crowd monitoring systems covering the 2026 site
– Dedicated traffic zones to separate shuttle operations from local roads
No final commitment yet
Despite the enthusiasm, both sides clarified that no binding contract had been signed. A Tomorrowland spokesperson who joined the inspection stated: “OUR TEAM WILL CONTINUE TECHNICAL EVALUATIONS BEFORE ANY FINAL DECISION IS MADE ABOUT HOSTING IN THAILAND.” Negotiations are set to resume in the second quarter of 2024, once feasibility studies are complete. If an agreement is reached, construction work at Wisdom Valley could begin by mid‑2025.
Local anticipation continues
After the meeting, a member of the local organizing committee told reporters in Banglamung District: “THIS PROJECT IS A CHANCE TO PLACE THAILAND ON THE GLOBAL MAP OF MODERN MUSIC.” Residents of Khao Maikaew, where roughly 9,000 people live, have expressed willingness to support logistics, accommodation, and volunteer programs once the final announcement arrives.
Officials expect an update before the end of 2024 on whether Pattaya will officially host Tomorrowland 2026—potentially making Thailand the first Southeast Asian country to welcome the festival’s global stage.
