Pattaya Faces a Strong Baht Challenge

The rising Thai currency boosts confidence in Bangkok but strains tourism budgets in the coastal resort city

PATTAYA, THAILAND – The high season for tourism began under clear skies, but the economic atmosphere in this bustling coastal city felt unusually subdued. As the Thai baht stayed firm at around 37.38 per euro, European visitors enjoyed steady value, while Americans found every dish, drink, and taxi ride noticeably pricier.

Capital inflows power the baht – and reshape tourism

Financial analysts traced the strong currency to increased foreign capital inflows into Thai bonds as U.S. interest rates declined, fuelling a demand for the baht. Economically, Bangkok celebrated the signal of stability, yet for Pattaya’s service workers and entrepreneurs, that same strength translated into quieter bars and smaller restaurant bills.

Local businesses described the shift in clear terms. The sentiment echoed along Beach Road: the exchange rate, not the welcome, had become the deciding factor.

When prices double and moods drop

Beyond currency shifts, the long‑debated dual pricing system resurfaced as a sore point. Many attractions and services charge foreigners more than locals. For visitors already struggling against a strong baht, this added friction left a bitter taste. “If the exchange rate is already against you, you at least want fair treatment,” a German tourist noted.

Business owners have tried to adapt through discount offers, extended happy hours, and special deals, but margins remain tight. Even well‑frequented night markets and beachside cafes reported restrained spending.

Expats adapt cautiously to higher costs

Long‑term foreign residents from Europe said they could still manage, as the euro’s stability softened the impact. Those relying on the U.S. dollar, however, felt the pinch. “I pay about ten percent more for everything now – and you notice it,” said an American resident who has lived in Pattaya for years. Still, few expressed plans to leave, praising the city’s climate, culture, and easy rhythm as worth the price difference.

Authorities focus on quality tourism

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) moved to counter the downturn with new campaigns aimed at European and Asian markets. Rather than promising cheap holidays, the message now emphasizes experiences and quality. A TAT spokesperson explained that officials wanted Thailand to remain appealing “independent of currency fluctuations.”

Events bring color – and cautious optimism

Despite economic unease, Pattaya’s event calendar stayed intact. The Pattaya International Fireworks Festival on 28–29 November and the Pattaya Countdown 2025 were set to draw tens of thousands of spectators. Many local vendors viewed these celebrations as a final push to salvage the season – a chance, they hoped, for visitors to loosen their wallets.

As the year’s end approached, the contrast remained stark: a strong baht symbolizing national stability, yet along the beaches of Pattaya, a community quietly calculating what prosperity truly means when every coin feels heavier to spend.
