Bangkok salon owner demands protection

A 39-year-old woman in Rat Burana was threatened by a gunman posing as a police officer, prompting calls for stronger safety measures.

BANGKOK, THAILAND – A routine afternoon in Bangkok’s Rat Burana district ended in fear when a man claiming to be a police officer confronted a local salon owner at gunpoint.

Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine whether the suspect was an actual officer or an impostor.

A normal day turned violent

The incident occurred around midday in a small hair salon on Rat Burana Road, where Nisarat “Niko” Auayklang, a 39-year-old business owner, was serving customers. A man she had never seen before parked a blue Yamaha Fino motorbike in front of the shop. Within moments, he began shouting insults and demanding attention, identifying himself as a police officer.

According to Nisarat, the stranger appeared to be in his mid-thirties to early forties, of slender build and about 1.55 to 1.60 metres tall. He wore a chestnut polo shirt decorated with a police-like insignia, green knee-length trousers, black sandals, and a white motorbike helmet.

The weapon that changed everything

What began as verbal aggression quickly turned terrifying. Nisarat noticed a firearm tucked into the man’s waistband. “I didn’t know him, but I was terrified for my life,” she recalled. Acting on instinct, she locked the salon door and tried to shield her customers, some of whom were trembling in fear.

The man continued shouting and photographing the shop from outside before circling the building repeatedly on his motorbike. Only after several tense minutes did he finally leave, leaving behind shock and lingering fear among those inside.

Police investigation underway

Later that day, Nisarat filed an official complaint at Rat Burana Police Station. Police Lieutenant Natthaphong Thasri, the deputy investigation chief handling the case, confirmed that officers were reviewing security camera footage and interviewing witnesses. Investigators are trying to confirm whether the armed man is truly a member of the police force or a fraudulent impersonator.

To reassure residents and local businesses, the station also committed to increased patrols in the area. Police said efforts were ongoing to identify the suspect and to clarify whether any official uniform or symbol had been misused.

Community fear and wider concerns

For Nisarat, the ordeal has shattered her sense of safety. “Whether he was a real officer or not, there’s no justification for threatening people with a gun,” she said. “This kind of behaviour is dangerous and unacceptable.”

Her concerns extend beyond her own life to that of her employees and clients. The incident has sparked a local conversation about public trust in law enforcement and how easily official insignia or uniforms can be imitated.

Ongoing uncertainty

Until investigators provide answers, the salon owner said she remains anxious, reacting to every sound outside the door. The broader question, she added, is one shared by many small business owners across Bangkok: how safe are they really when individuals can impersonate officers without facing immediate detection?

As Bangkok authorities weigh preventive steps, the Rat Burana confrontation has exposed a fragile sense of security in one of the city’s residential-commercial districts — and raised new demands for consistent police accountability.
