BANGKOK, THAILAND – The long-planned expansion of Bangkok’s Purple Line metro project reached a new milestone this week after the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) confirmed the full demolition of the Samsen Police Station, clearing a critical section for construction.
Demolition Marks a Turning Point
The removal of the decades-old police station forms part of the Purple Line Extension (Tao Poon–Rat Burana section). According to the MRTA, the work was completed as planned, allowing engineers to move forward with stabilising the ground and addressing soil subsidence that had affected parts of Samsen Road.
Teams have now begun drilling and soil testing to assess and enhance the terrain quality. Monitoring systems have been set up to measure changes in the groundwater levels, ensuring that all procedures meet strict safety regulations.
Maintaining Access and Safety
To prevent severe traffic disruption in the congested district, workers are building a temporary access ramp near the Dipangkorn Rasmijoti Building by Vajira Hospital. This short-term structure allows hospital visitors and residents to move around the area during the ongoing construction phase.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Public Works will later take responsibility for restoring the road surface permanently, following detailed design standards already approved by city engineers.
Neighbour Concerns Addressed
Responding to community feedback, the MRTA said all noisy late-night operations have been suspended to reduce disturbances. Inspections are being carried out regularly to ensure stability of nearby residential complexes and police housing.
According to an MRTA spokesperson,
“WE ARE COMMITTED TO ACCELERATING THE RESTORATION OF THE ROAD SURFACE WHILE UPHOLDING STRICT SAFETY AND QUALITY CONTROL THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS.”
The agency emphasised that the well-being of local residents remains a top priority as the work progresses.
Next Steps in the Project
With the demolition phase now complete, construction can shift focus to the underground sections of the new metro line. Once finished, the Purple Line Extension aims to link Tao Poon in the north with Rat Burana in the south, greatly easing Bangkok’s persistent congestion and shortening travel times for thousands of commuters.
Despite its complexity and urban constraints, the MRTA said the project remains on schedule. Officials believe the ongoing efforts illustrate that Bangkok’s long-term infrastructure ambitions are moving steadily toward reality.

The development rekindles debate in the city over the trade-off between rapid infrastructure growth and urban quality of life. While officials argue that an expanded metro network is vital to the capital’s sustainability, many locals remain focused on managing the temporary noise, dust, and disruptions that large-scale construction inevitably brings.
