Bangkok, Thailand – Forty undercover officers posing as construction workers arrested nine people in the Nana area during an early-morning raid that exposed an international smuggling and street-distribution technique.

The raid took place just after midnight on Sukhumvit 11 in Watthana and was led by Police Colonel Theeradet Thumsuthee, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau. Forty plainclothes detectives were disguised in concrete-worker uniforms as they approached the suspects. The operation resulted in the detention of eight Nigerian men, aged between 23 and 41, and a 36-year-old Thai national from Udon Thani. All nine remained in custody as the investigation continued.

Police said the group used a familiar tactic among traffickers in tourist districts: concealing small packets of drugs in the mouth to present to customers and swallowing them when law enforcement appeared. ‘Such drug dealers normally keep packets of cocaine and other drugs in their mouths,’ Police Colonel Theeradet told officers at the scene, explaining the method used to evade arrest. Investigators said couriers had been transporting swallowed packets by air into the country, where they were later retrieved and sold in tourist hotspots like the Nana area.

Officers initially seized two packets of cocaine with a combined weight of four grams during the raid. Further searches were under way as police waited for additional packages to be excreted by other suspects, a process the investigation relied upon to recover more evidence.
