PHUKET, THAILAND – A parasailing assistant jumped into rough seas and loosened his harness to free a tourist after a sudden storm capsized a boat near Kata Beach on 16 October, officials and local media reported.
Unexpected storm capsizes boat
Around 15:00 local time, a sudden squall struck the waters off Kata Beach in the Karon district, overturning the parasailing boat while a tourist remained suspended beneath the canopy. Both the tourist and the crew member operating the chute were left in a perilous position as waves battered the equipment.
The assistant made a rapid decision: he unclipped his safety belt and plunged into the choppy sea. The move was intended to reduce the weight on the canopy and allow it to descend toward the shoreline rather than being dragged or driven out to sea.
Immediate rescue and hospital treatment
The tactic worked. The parachute came down near the beach where first responders were waiting to provide assistance. Channel 7 reported the tourist complained of chest tightness and the assistant suffered a minor facial injury. Both were taken to Chalong Hospital for further examination and observation. No deaths or serious injuries were reported.
Witnesses and emergency crews praised the speed of the response, saying the assistant’s actions helped avoid a potentially worse outcome.

Observers say unpredictable coastal weather can rapidly turn routine rides into dangerous situations, and swift, well-practised responses are critical.
Authorities and tour operators have been urged to review safety protocols for rapid weather changes and ensure staff are prepared for emergency detachment and rescue procedures. For now, the assistant’s decisive actions have been credited with preventing a much graver outcome and have prompted renewed debate about how to better protect visitors taking part in water sports.
